Why Mister Baby?

The question I get asked most frequently is… “where did the name Mister Baby come from?”

In 2016, I was getting ready to graduate college and was at a creative crossroads as a graphic design student who found more interest in designing with fabrics and fashion instead of digital design.

So I started exploring ways to embellish my clothing using hand embroidery and free-motion embroidery on my home sewing machine. The first thing I made was this Mister Baby jacket that I saw while watching the film Mystery Train. I loved it and was inspired to remake it for myself. That jacket then became the focal point for my college design showcase, where I expressed my design skills onto clothing.

This jacket continued to hang at the top of all my creative spaces throughout the years, until it was time to start my business and it just clicked…that I am Mister Baby. It’s evolved so much over the years, but continues to feel like the perfect representation me and this brand.

Behind her, there is a black leather jacket with red and leopard print text that reads 'MISTER BABY,' displayed on a stand, and a leather skirt hanging beneath it. The woman is indoors with a white wall and a paper heart drawing in the background.

Today, Mister Baby operates out of The Umbrella Vintage which I co-own and curate alongside Jillian of Rarity Collective. The Umbrella Vintage is located at The Salt Shed, so make sure to pop in next time you’re there for a show for some vintage treasure and maybe a stitch or two!

The store has pink walls with a large mural of cartoon characters and a neon sign reading 'mister baby'. Shelves display various yarns and plush toys, and there are items like scissors, bags, and hats on the counter.
